Clever Title... I can't think of one

Hello everyone!
Well, I know I've been posting less blog posts lately, but things have started to get a bit crazier at work and I haven't had as much time to do the blog. All in all things are going well. The big push to compile some information and write up proposals and reports and get things in place before I leave is upon me. In addition to that I have one more field visit I'm going to be fitting in. I leave tomorrow morning and I'll be going back to al-Mahweet and al-Hodayda and visiting some additional communities, as well as visiting a couple of communities where an organization called CARE implemented some terrace rehabilitation projects in the past in order to gain some insight into how successful they were, etc. This time I am going with not only my translator, but the director of the Agricultural Unit at the Social Fund. Hopefully it will be an interesting trip.

A small anecdote:

So, one funny thing here is that for some common car models, the car models have names. For example, a Toyota Landcruiser is a "Monica." The story is that apparently they were being introduced and becoming popular at the same time that Monica Lewinsky was in the news! Also, there is another type of Toyota Landcruiser that is called ليلى علوي (Layla 'Aluwi), who is a popular Egyptian singer. Another one is that a Mercedes 1.3 is called أرنب (Arnab), which means rabbit. Then there is the شبح (Shabah), which means ghost, but I don't remember the type of car that one is. My two favorites are another type of Mercedes called دموع الشعب (Damua' Ash-Sha'b) which means "tears of the people," because it's so expensive, and the other one is a type of car Katherina heard about in Syria. She says it's another type of truck or SUV that has a water tank or some type of tank on the back and is called Abu Duba which means "Father of the water tank." Anyway, that's pretty funny to me.

Well, I'm exhausted. I will try and take some more pictures in the field so I can post another interesting post or two before I go home. Hope everyone is well!

  1. Hi Anna,

I love reading about your travels, and amazing, interesting life abroad helping others and working towards your PhD. How inspiring, and all-around awesome!

Those car names are hilarious, I love it! Funny how we find these quirky, new-to-us yet mundane things that locals in other places pay no attention to or take for granted.

Hope you're well, healthy, and happy. Safe journeying, Mendo hugs,

    xoxo Tyler
